The new “TPA” laboratory of STRABAG Építő Zrt. has been erected on Illatos út in the 9th district of Budapest. The building unit contains a material testing lab and associated service rooms, changing rooms, and offices. Our Group has been in charge of architecture and integrated design. In the course of planning we had to take Strabag’s standard office design into consideration, yet with plenty of room for manoeuvre left in articulating, in terms of both architecture and interior design, the layout, the washrooms, the kitchens, the corridors, the entrance, and the mass of the building. As to its use, the building is divided into two main parts: the asphalt and concrete laboratory and the office space serving the tests. The laboratory space, i.e. the main function of the building is located on the ground floor, with adjacent office units of the lab assistants, as well as special testing labs, cutting rooms, and a sample storage. Great emphasis was placed on the requirement that, contrary to the common practice of similar facilities, shared and community spaces be designed to a higher standard of use.
